About
Imaginary Gear.
Hardware that never existed. Harmonics that do.
Why
Gear that never existed.
Most audio software is a copy of something: a photograph of a circuit, a scan of a console, a very good impression of a very expensive rack. NohmTones builds the other kind — gear that was never manufactured, designed directly in mathematics and then given the physicality it would have had. Not an impression of a unit. A unit.
An imaginary unit can do what a rare one cannot: it recalls, automates, exists on forty tracks at once. But it should not be frictionless. Gear has weight, drift and opinions, and those are not defects to sand off — they are where the sound lives. Calibration is that belief made precise: screws placed exactly where drift changes the tone and never the truth.
NohmTones is an independent studio in Austria. We sell directly, license without accounts, and write down the reasoning wherever a decision was unusual — most of it lives onthe licensing page.
The name
No ohm.
An ohm measures resistance, and NohmTones has none to offer: no resistor, no solder, no rack unit — only the sound a circuit would have made, and the behaviour that makes it feel like an object rather than a screen. The name is the disclaimer and the door, at once.
